I'm Famous and Frightened!
As part of their investigation into the many ghosts at the locations used in the programmes, the celebrities were looking for evidence of the ghosts using a variety of equipment. There is no such thing as a 'ghost detector' but by taking careful measurements of some of the environmental variables including temperature and Electromagnetic Fields - EMF, we hoped that they would discover what was normal and what was paranormal.
For all 3 shows, Para.Science carried out the baseline measurements and conducted the supporting paranormal investigation.
Para.Science also supplied the ghosthunting equipment for the celebrities to use. We also 'trained' our celebrity ghosthunters to operate the equipment correctly.
EMF Meters
These measure changes in the Electromagnetic Fields that are present at all locations. Some researchers have suggested that unusual high levels of EMF may be an indicator of paranormal activity taking place or about to take place. EMF is measured in milli Gauss (mG)

A useful machine for measuring EMF levels - high levels are indicated by either a light or an alarm tone. It is capable of measuring EMF in two ranges: 0 - 3mG or 0 - 30mG making it the perfect tool for measuring subtle changes in the EMF.
Dr. Gauss sometimes called Gauss Master
A sensitive machine but more basic than the CellSensor, only has an audible alarm and will turn itself off after a couple of minutes. The meter has two ranges 0-5mG and 0-50mG. This machine is no longer in production.
Thermometers
Many people report sudden drops of temperature before or during paranormal activity. It may be an 'early warning' that something is about to happen. A fast responding, accurate thermometer is essential to measure rapid changes frequently associated with paranormal activity.

Easy to use and very accurate, this is an extremely useful tool for taking temperature measurements. The backlit display makes it easy to read in the dark and it even has a handy laser pointer to help the user aim it at areas to be measured.
Infra-Red Non Contact Thermometer
Similar to the ST-8801 but without the options to turn off the backlight and laser pointer - shining lasers in the dark can be risky as you have to avoid the eyes of others. Allows accurate measurements to be quickly taken.
ST-8802 4 in 1 Enviro-meter
Measures 4 environmental variables in one device - Temperature, Humidity, Light intensity and Sound level. For this investigation the celebrities will be mainly concentrating on taking readings of the humidity. Water has been implicated in many paranormal studies and the higher the humidity, the higher levels of water present in a location.
The Para.Science Investigation Equipment
To carry out the supporting paranormal investigation at the various locations, we took with us a full range of state of the art equipment. Many items can be directly linked to several laptop PC's to allow us to record all the data in the most accurate way possible.
EMF baseline recording is handled by computer linked 3 axis sensors with handheld Aaronia EMF meters giving us the ability to quickly 'sweep' any area and make a rapid assessment of EMF levels in any location. Alpha Labs Tri-Field Natural EM meters are also used at key locations throughout investigations.
Baseline temperature is measured with computer linked data loggers that record the temperature every 10 seconds, sending the information to a laptop PC for instant read-out. The team also carry laser non-contact thermometers so that they can quickly check an area for unusual temperature changes that may be reported. A computer-linked system also gives us important data about humidity changes.
Radiation monitoring is taken care of with a very accurate digital Geiger counter as supplied to the Fire and Civil defence services. Research has indicated that higher than background levels are found in some paranormal sites.
Low frequency sound - Infrasound is also associated with paranormal activity and we will be using an Auris Infrasound system designed by Spectral Electronics especially for Para.Science. Very high frequency sound measurements are taken using a Canum device, also by Spectral Electronics. This also makes a pretty neat bat detector too!
Audio and Video recording is taken care by a number of Sony Minidisc recorders and Mini DV camcorders, fitted with Nightshot - the ability to shoot video in darkness.
